Omni V Lower Audio Gain Mod

From the Ten-Tec Reflector - February 16, 2008

After reading David's post (see below) and Joe, N5KAT's response, I called Ten-Tec and spoke to Paul Clinton, the Service Manager, and asked him if he knew of the mod to lower the audio gain. He went to his "Modifications Book" and said that I should put a 3.3K 1/4w resistor from the junction of R79 and C51 on the IF/AF Board to ground. This junction goes to the cable connector socket 57 on the board.

After looking at it, I tack soldered one end of the 3.3K to resistor R79 ( the end closest to the connector pins of 57) and the other end to the board foil - which is ground. Simple to do, and I didn't have to remove the board - did it all from the top.

The results ? - OUTSTANDING ! Now the perfect listening position of the volume control with my headphones, or the speaker, is at 11 or 12 o'clock instead of 8 or 9.

I had previously put in the W3TS mod and had played with the value of the resistor in the notch circuit that Joe, N5KAT 1) referred to, but the volume was still too touchy. Paul's mod sure did the trick. Thank you Mr. Clinton !

I have also re-capped all the electrolytic capacitors on the IF/AF Board, Logic Board, and the VF Display Driver Board. WHAT A DIFFERENCE !! It is unbelievable to me how quiet the receiver is now - signals just POP out of the quiet ! Sure recommend it to anyone with an OMNI V.

Thanks again to Joe, N5KAT for all his help and encouragement.

Last March, I took my omni V down to TT for a checkup and while they were at it, I asked them to do something about the overpowering AF gain. Like you say, you could breath on it…..very touchy past "cracking it open". Almost unusable with headphones unless you have an outboard volume control. They did an audio mod that worked much better when I got home. I didn't ask what they did, but it worked fine. So a mod does exist that will greatly help the radio.

February 11, 2008 - W3TS changed a resistor in the notch circuit to recapture some gain lost in lowering product detector drive and I found that this value can be adjusted or left stock to move the sweet spot on the volume control up toward 11 or 12 o clock.
