Scout Lamp Replacement

From the Ten-Tec Reflector December 27, 2005

In an attempt to replace the meter lamp in my scout, I have tried in vain to remove the meter, I can't for the life of me figure out how to get the front panel off.

Took out all the screws that seem to be holding it on, and it looks like I need to remove the entire pcb assembly that is also screwed into the front panel..

There's just got to be an easier way to get the meter out..besides the meter lamp, the meter itself is flaky..

Other than calling the factory, has anyone ever removed the front panel on a scout??

If your scout is like mine, there's no need to remove anything on the front panel. By removing the top you need to remove the board above the meter. This is just a set of screws and a few plugs. You need to slide the freed board back a bit and remove it. The lamp is easily removed by pulling it out latterally and replaced the same way. Its like a cork in a bottle.

Straightening out the meter can be done w/o removing it as well, but you need to be really gentle with a dental probe or some such. Good luck.

One of the boards, the one with the display, lifts out, but you have to remove the front panel and pull it forward to gain enough clearance to remove the boards. To get the front panel off, remove all knobs, remove the screws on the sides of the panel, that secure it to the chassis. There are two screws on each side. Remove the nuts and washers on the two potentiometer shafts and the panel should pull forward. On my Scout there is no nut on the phone jack shaft. The panel will pull off, but it will still be constrained by a multitude of wires.

The lamp unplugs from the meter. It is held in place by a rubber grommet. I cut one lamp wire and inserted a 56 ohm resistor in series with it to reduce the brightness for nighttime use and prolong the lamp life. You could also replace it with an LED, I'm sure.

When reassembling, I tighten the side screws on the panel first, then the 2 pot shafts.
