Dirty Power Connectors

From the Ten-Tec Reflector March 10, 2000

Generally, when a rig is here for trade-in or service and acting flaky due to a possible power supply issue, one of the first things our techs will do is clean out the power supply connectors on the end of the PS cable and/or the one panel mounted inside the radio. It's amazing how many radios will spring back to from life from "dead" or erratic just by doing this. We use DeoxIT DN5 spray cleaner for this purpose - it's not cheap but it works great.

DeoxIT is THE best contact cleaner, bar none. But it needs to be used sparingly, in quarter drop amounts per contact. It can soften insulating materials like wafer switches and PC boards if sprayed indiscriminantly. The dropper bottle is the best one to use. Its mildly expensive and a little hard to find (try Electronic Supply of Ames, 515-232-7020, or look for Dan's web page) but it goes a long ways. They have a different product especially for potentiometers. I've not used it yet.
