Omni VII - Procedure to Split VFO's With Different Band Widths

The following are instructions for the model 588 (OMNI VII) to split VFOs with different Band Widths i.e. narrow BW for the DX and wide BW for searching the pile for "who is working him now".

I have come up with an alternative which seems to work for CW pileups. I use a different band stack register for split operation. Put VFO A on the DX freq, Mode set to USB, IF 500, BW 350 (or any narrow combination); set A=B; Split; A/B, tune B VFO to the pileup freq; set mode UCW; set BW to 1200, IF to 2.5k.

With this configuration you can push the A/B button to toggle between listening to the DX (VFO A) with narrow BW and the pile (VFO B) with wide BW. An advantage to this configuration is that since the VFO on the DX QRG is in USB, it will NOT transmit on the DX's freq if you are using a standard keyer although those using AFSK to send CW via SSB can still QRM the DX.

I have come up with another alternative which seems to work for SSB pileups. I use a different band stack register for split operation. Put VFO A on the DX freq, Mode set to U/LCW, IF 2.5k, BW 2400 (or any wide combination); set A=B; Split; A/B, tune B VFO to the pileup freq; set mode U/LSB; set BW to 2600, IF to 6k or any comfortable listening width.

With this configuration you can push the A/B button to toggle between listening to the DX (VFO A) with narrow BW and the pile (VFO B) with wide BW. An advantage to this configuration is that since the VFO on the DX QRG is in CW, it will NOT transmit SSB on the DX's freq.
